Cusco
High in the Peruvian Andes mountains lies the ancient Inca city of Cusco. As capitol to the Inca Empire, Cusco was home to Inca nobles, captured chieftans while servants and artisans lived on the outskirts. Subjects from the empire made regular pilgramages to the native capitol. In 1553, the Spanish conquistador Pizzaro and his men finally made their way into Cusco. They were asononished to find a fabulous city with superb structures constructed of hard volcanic stone the beauty of which surpassed any they had ever seen. Cusco many of the Inca were subsequently dismantled and and the stones used in its reserection in the Spanish style of archetecture. Today, Cusco is a mecca for international travelers visiting Peru. Central to all Cusco activities is the Plaza de Armas, the square in the cener of town. This area is a good starting point for tours, shopping, restaurants and just plain people watching.
